I was thinking of Spicer, too.

Ruth Ben-Ghiat, author of Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present, was on MSNBC with Ali Velshi (filling in for Rachel Maddow) this evening. She spoke of how a key component of the autocrat's playbook is to subvert and distort reality so that truth is obsolete and the autocrat is the only source for "reliable" information.

We all laughed at Trump's pathetic and idiotic attempt to portray his inauguration crowd as historically "yuge," but the darker side of that petty lie -- like the Birther conspiracy theory -- was to get his followers to accompany him down the rabbit hole into his own twisted fantasy world.
