My dad was always on the heavy side. A steady diet of that (sorry for the pun) only aggravated any other health problems he suffered.
We did everything we could think of to discourage bad behavior and reinforce good behavior. Nothing worked. Nothing helped.
And I remember so clearly (and painfully) that day Mom and I visited him in the ICU. One foot was protruding from the bed sheet. My mom drew my attention to the skin color. It was flesh-toned, instead of being beet-red-going-on-purple. I think it was because his feet were elevated, not hanging down so gravity would complicate blood circulation.
She gave me a look that said Hey! Look at that! Looks like theres some improvement!
I wasnt convinced or reassured. Neither of us thought he was that close to death.
Turns out he WAS.
Complications of diabetes developed over a lifetime of bad eating habits. But you couldnt tell him
ANYTHING.
