Christianity is a crazy quilt of contradictions and hypocrisy, and provides fertile ground for hatemongers/scammers/cult leaders and other fanatics to build a following.

...and the most reliable way to build that following is to declare your followers as "god's people" or "saved" and anybody who doesn't follow you, as "infidels" or "unbelievers" who are under Satan's influence. Of course, this leads to their lust for political power, because they need it to save the "unwashed" and receive their god's blessing.
