It probably is, his having been in public life so long.

But I am appalled at what these people who work on our behalf are having to endure just because of their political position. Would any one of us put up with this kind of stuff at work? Having people yell ugly things at us in public?

Having some moron yell at you through your office letterbox? Having someone stalk you down the hallways, challenging your loyalty to the country? (AOC)

Having your life threatened (Nancy Pelosi) by trump supporters gone amok in your place of work? Having some slob sit in your assistant's chair with his feet on the desk?

It's bad enough that republicans are intractable and completely unwilling to work on any project that benefits the American public, and all because they are so petty that they don't want Democrats taking credit for anything that's a popular program. That alone would take a good deal of satisfaction out of the work. If there's no satisfaction, what is there?

At some point good public representatives are going to say they've had enough and will no longer put up with this abuse. That will be a bad development for all of us on the left side of the spectrum.
