Dr Fauci said “There’s no reason to be walking around with a mask. When you’re in the middle of an outbreak, wearing a mask might make people feel a little bit better and it might even block a droplet, but it’s not providing the perfect protection that people think that it is. And, often, there are unintended consequences — people keep fiddling with the mask and they keep touching their face.”

He changed his tune later, of course. Even if he was doing it because masks weren't available (which I believed at the time), it was untrue. Besides, people could have made home masks if given instructions, and masks could have been diverted to healthcare workers.

While I have no real issue with the government "hiding" some things from us in certain circumstances, they ought to admit it when conditions are right.
