Once it became clear members of his own administration were beginning to turn on him, to the point that the 25th was being seriously discussed, he was more or less obliged to create some distance between his own ass and the insurrectionists. He probably couldn't care less about impeachment at this point, but being tossed out by his own Cabinet would be a whole 'nother level of humiliation.


His efforts have been as ham-handed as anything else he's tried in his life, but I wouldn't be surprised if he declines to pardon the insurrectionists to save his own misshapen ego.

I'm not saying this with any certainty. He's pardoned some real pieces of work in recent weeks. I'm pretty sure he'll still issue blanket pardons for his family and some close associates (e.g. Giuliani), but his situation has changed enough that he might not pardon anyone who's been arrested for the attack on the Capitol.
