(15,958 posts)This is why I am pained by the refusal of conservatives to evolve. Because at the end of the day, they have a gun to our heads. We have to accept the Lincoln Project, Romney (and by extension globally for instance Saudi Arabia, the Muslim brotherhood etc. and whatever eventually becomes the "moderate" wing of the RSS, Xi Ping, Putin and so on..) because the alternative is neo-nazis, ISIS, Hindu extremists, Putin's mafia, Xi Ping's mafia and all the corporate creeps feathering their nests and hoping only poor Bangladeshis and poor people generally will be affected by the climate crisis. I am deliberately leaving Judaism out of it because I am not in the mood for left or right semitism.
I do think I am going to keep an eye out for ecoterrorism, animal activist extremism, atheist extremism etc., as a committed animal activist, environmentalist and atheist. You can be sure that if someone used violence, manipulation or sleaziness to promote a cause I sincerely back, it would not take me 20 fucking years to condemn them for it. That is left right asymmetry.
We -serious left wing activists do not manipulate people, have a finger to the wind, wait till the very last moment to jump ship and expect cookies for it.
These people are unevolved and we have to endure them because there are far scarier people on the right. I don't like it but it has to be done in the interests of the greater good *gloomily* . Nobody gains by the US goinf crazy and if that means vomiting over tolerance of Romney and the Lincoln Project it has to be done...ugh..
Strangely enough-insane, misinformed etc as they are, I do feel sympathy for the least malicious, least racist, sexist Trump supporters and wish they could be deradicalized. Ridiculing them as uncool and stupid will only radicalize them further. The reachable ones have to be appealed to and deradicalized, or we all lose. They to go the Derek Black, Katie (forget the surname) route.
But wealthy movement conservatives who knew all along I find hard to forgive but we have to as these are scary volatile times. Poverty, ignorance etc.are unlikely to make people broad minded, compassionate.
A creature like Romney who has had every advantage possible has no excuse for being like this. And yet we have to suffer him because he is better at theatre than Bannon, Trump and Stephen Miller.
I despise Mitt Romney. But I am reluctantly forced to back his kind of Republican as they are at least not qanon.
I will delete this i dislike talking about anything dully non controversial...but I do despise Romney..while recognizing that in such scary times even he is needed. But I don't have to like it.
