but several times I've done so because of an excellent boss. Never a lot, but nonetheless I was willing to put in some time.

A story about a good boss: When my sons were in high school they worked at the local AMC theater. One day the three of us showed up to watch a movie, and the manager said to them, "Hey, a shipment of stuff has just arrived. Would you be willing to help me get it into the storeroom?" We were there in plenty of time before the movie was going to start, so they said, sure. He said, "Go ahead and clock in." They put in maybe 15 minutes, and would have been glad to just do it, but he made sure they got paid. That's a good boss. Another might have taken advantage of the fact they were kids, but he wasn't about to.
