In reply to the discussion: Newsweek: Bernie Sanders Says Democratic Party Has Become a 'Party of Coastal Elites' [View all]Hortensis
(58,785 posts)You NEED to be angry at Sanders and Trump, not at those who are angry at them for trying to play on the weaknesses and inflammability of so many vulnerable to populist messaging. And they prey on ALL vulnerable Americans, of course, not just "flyover."
So, here again: "Coastal" is a negative emotional message to both antagonistic middle America and antagonistic white conservatives, telling them who to resent (the majority of all Americans). "Centrist elites" - negative gut message to both right AND left wing, but especially LW resentments. again against mainstream voters.
And don't miss that using "coastal" instead of "urban" and "city" is a more subtle way of including reference to minorities. A quiet dogwhistle, but not missed by those it's intended for.
Remember, both left and RW populist movements draw social conservatives. A lot stronger on the right, of course, which is why Trump won overwhelmingly, but definitely on the left also. There's a lot of overlap. That's why Sanders couldn't promise what AA Democrats required of their candidate in the two primaries -- it would have lost him too many of his social conservative leaners.
"Make America great again" - Trump. "Anyway, the Democrats do it too" - Sanders answering a question at the She the People conference about Repubs packing the courts with predatory racists. (How's that for insulting the intelligence and rejecting the concerns of a very intelligent, mostly Democrat black audience?!)
We should be angry wherever we see that, DTom.
