CA-50 moves from 'Likely' to 'Lean' Republican' [View all]

n what's become an ugly slugfest, former GOP Rep. Darrell Issa is mounting his comeback bid in what was supposed to be the last red bastion in San Diego County. But Trump is unlikely to replicate his 55 percent to 40 percent 2016 win in these exurbs, and an early September SurveyUSA poll showed Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar within a point of Issa, 45 percent to 46 percent.

Campa-Najjar lost by three points here to then-indicted GOP Rep. Duncan Hunter in 2018 and is trying to cast Issa in the same "criminal" light by pointing to arrests from the 1970s and 1980s for grand theft auto (before Issa started his car alarm empire). Issa is spending freely calling Campa-Najjar a "lying socialist politician." Issa retains the advantage, but a record-shattering turnout could produce a surprise.
