(3,393 posts)Like so many of us here, I'm a boomer. My parents made all the sacrifices people made during WWII, (y'know, the Big One!) and were as dismayed and confused as any of our parents by my generation's response to Viet Nam. But by the time I graduated from college in 1970, they had turned around, too. Dad used to shake his head and talk about the "waste of all those young lives", with a sadness in his voice that I had never experienced. A couple of years later, Mom and I were talking and she told me that if I had been a boy, and had gotten drafted after school, she and dad had decided that she'd pack my bags and he'd drive me to Canada. Totally rocked me back on my heels. She said they decided they'd rather be in a situation where they had to visit me in another country than at the cemetary. They reached the point where they understood that resistance can be patriotic.
I feel so badly for this young woman...Trump is a monster.
