Many colleges and universities are closing for a month. My son attends a county magnet high school. He said today the teachers all explained how to find assignments and submit work online. All students are to bring home books, notebooks, binders, etc tomorrow. A final decision will be made on Saturday, but two high schools just north of his school have students who have tested positive and have already closed. The county is very rural, so it’s a large area that could probably be contained if people didn’t intermingle. The kids do clubs, dances, activities and sports through their home districts. My son in involved in the home theater program (and they are really spectacularly talented, considering the small population-they win state and national awards every year) and, I guess unfortunately, they shut down the current production three hours before the curtain was to go up tonight. I know they spend a lot of money to produce these shows and then recoup the second week, and I know the kids have been working until midnight (including weekends) for weeks, but we have a very large senior citizen population, and the seniors really come out in large numbers to see the productions. Sadly, they also always vote down the school budget, and the general belief here is that the virus is a hoax, so this decision to shut down is going to be very unpopular, but I’m sure it will save lives. Personally, I’m relieved that he was accepted into the county school, which is a STEM school for gifted students, and most of the parents are science/math types. I don’t see these parents being upset at a science-based decision. The local school, however, is a different story. This town is overrun with Trumpublicans. I have been following the school/parent blog and the local parents do not believe the virus is real, and I’m sure there will be outrage if they decide to close. Having taught in this district, I also know that these same parents will be the first to point the finger when their kids get sick, so it’s a no win situation.
