(463 posts)This thread, I just don't understand it. How is there no self-awareness of behavior? A week of abhorrent, attacking posts directed at any critical thought - many of the posters being attacked being LGBT - and then once proven those people were right, more threads attacking people.
After 9-11, we often said, "Bin Laden won." Because he may be dead, but the wars we engaged in and the security state we built at home eroded our basic democratic values and liberties. The Twin Towers and 3,000 people weren't the only things we lost. We lost part of our character as a country.
In a similar vein, I think Trump won. Now it's all tribalism, hatred, conspiracy theory, and an absolutely lack of ability to critically evaluate facts and admit that sometimes we're wrong. We used to be the reality-based community. What happened? This isn't just this board. I see it all over the internet. It's becoming so hard to read anything about politics these days. Trump somehow unlocked pure, unbridled emotion and irrationality. You can't even talk to people nowadays - on either side. It's partly why I haven't delurked before now. I read things and realize there's no arguing at all, because logic and thoughtfulness aren't the motivating impulses at work. It's all id. It's as if Trump's pathology was contagious to the body politic in this country.
It's incredibly disheartening. These threads have been mind-blowing. And I cannot believe how many people in this one can be so unaware of what they sound like. This is not a good look for anyone.
Edit - As far as the hacking lie, I think Joy has climbed down as far as she can on the matter. If she flatly states, "I lied," that would probably be the end of her show. I don't want that. I think her explanation was her subtle admission while not being forthright enough to damage her employment or career. It's barely even between the lines. She knows she screwed up. And I sympathize for how to reacted. She is a national figure with more to lose now. She panicked, came up with an easily disprovable claim in the moment, and didn't quite know how to walk that back. She did, if only winkingly.
I'm fine with her. She's made amends as far as I'm concerned. I'm not going to keep sniping at her. If she continues being a force for good for the LGBT community as she was this weekend, then I think she should keep on trucking. It's the most we can ask of anyone to be honest.
