November 9, 2012.
From tacticsforchange.org:
"This was part of the annual activities anti-immigration that the organization carries out. Dilemma Action: In November 2012 a group of about 50 neo-Nazis held a rally of about 50 supporters, but over a hundred protesters, dressed as clowns, organized by the Latin American Coalición, a community of Latin Americans in North Carolina that promotes equal participation in the city, came to counter-protest. They brought squeaky toys, whistles, noise-makers, red noses, and flour (when the NSM would say white power, the clowns would throw white flour into the air).".
The clowns went through several permutations of "mis-hearing" the KKK'rs.
"White Flowers!" Clowns threw white flowers. Nope.
Oh! "Wife Power!" A another bunch of clowns paraded by in white wedding dresses. Still...not quite right....
"Tight showers!" another batch of clowns hoisted up fake showers for them to run underneath.
From soujerners
"It was a beautiful day. The white supremacist group was so outmatched, upstaged, and overwhelmed that they called it quits a couple of hours early. But the clowns marched on, their charade snowballing into a full-on street parade marching through the city streets with police escorts smiling by their side, proclaiming a contagious message of love and laughter.".
It's great to have been reminded of this very inventive counter protest.
And someone even made a children book about it...which I didn't know till I looked up the event to make sure I remembered it correctly.
