The DOJ legal counsel and white house counsel, etc were in place in part to ensure the administration does not break the law -and that they are not liable to be credibly prosecuted by following administrations. It is a major reason why Trump is having a hard time prosecuting any of his enemies right now: because their actions were thoroughly vetted by the best legal minds in the world.
Now what happens when that counsel and best legal team are sidelined? When you suddenly get an executive order deeming the stupidest person in the world as the chief legal interpreter for the executive branch, overruling all of the actual lawyers? Does that suddenly make the illegal things they decide to do, legal -and absolve them of all responsibility?
Or will these individuals who decided not to evaluate the legality of their actions when given the chance, begin to learn what will happen if they pretend they are above the law?
Many lf these people are terrified. In particular because the groundswell of opposition that erupts if they keep this up will be unstoppable; and yes: Because most can't fathom going to prison.
The tide is turning quicker than ever and these fuckers have some very hard questions ahead of them. Some of the top brass might escape with a pardon or two. Most will be prosecuted federally -and even those that get a pardon could see themselves accountable for every state law and TRO they ordered to be violated -along with the morons who individually thought arresting thousands of people without a warrant won't come back to haunt them because they were "following orders."
The harder Trump pushes his authoritarian agenda, the harder the public pushes back. He doesnt care because he's the only one immune to all of this -and his health is failing anyways. But if this admin truly wants to test the resolve of the American people, they will see the BLM and No Kings protests will be nothing compared to the 10s of millions of people daily that pour into the streets.
