(239,218 posts)I can't say that I'd be in the least surprised. We know how TFG and his MAGA followers like to call issues the exact opposite of that they are - like the "big beautiful bill" which screws over the American people.

(239,218 posts)I visited the USSR in the late '80s with my grandmother had joined a peace group which had a "sister town" there - and the people were very friendly towards Americans. However, they did not like then-President Reagan one little bit because he gave then-Soviet President Gorbachev such a tough time. Gorbachev had instituted more progressive polices which the Russian hard liners forced him to roll back thanks to Reagan.

(7,076 posts)I was living in Japan at the time and met some young Russian entrepreneurs who would come to Japan, buy used cars, and then drive them back to Moscow to sell. It was a pretty good deal since used Japanese cars at the time tended to be Toyotas with low mileage. I met them at the home of a Japanese man who had studied Russian and had known them for some time.
What I remember most is how carefully the Japanese man prepared a basket of fresh fruit and placed it in a semi private spot in the room. They ate the fruit with such reverence. It was clear that it was a very special treat for them.

(239,218 posts)And where would they get them serviced/fixed? At least in the cities, public transportation was readily available.
But what I find most depressing now (other than Americans are certainly not welcome) is that at the time the Russians were so dedicated to peace. Since they had suffered so terribly during WWII, fought on their own land, there were statues and plaques everywhere, remembering those who were lost and dedicated to peace. They even had museums in the schools to teach the children about the war so they would never forget. We met with several peace groups while we were there and one older woman who had served as a nurse during the war sticks in my mind. She said, "when you go back, please tell your president that we want peace." *sigh*

(52,359 posts)It could be a vanity thing.
It could be a message to TSF that he isn't getting any more Musk Money.
It would be a hapless venture to garner non-MAGA Republicans and Independents.
