A growing number of college students are reportedly turning to artificial intelligence for help with their coursework, but researchers are warning about the potential negative effects of relying on the technology. James Walsh, features writer for New York Magazine's Intelligencer, spoke with students and professors about the use of AI and joins CBS News to unpack his reporting.

1. Many of these anti-AI stories

Are done by people who don’t understand AI. For example, there have been coding tools for many years that can pre-populate blocks of code. Why wouldn’t coders be taught using those tools?

In writing, there have been plagiarism detection software in the market for probably 20 years. Since current LLM AI is essentially a full text search engine, if it writes a paper, it is likely plagiarizing the work of others. These existing plagiarism detection tools, which are likely enhanced by AI now, will not only be very effective at identifying plagiarized writing, but should be able to cite the plagiarized content.

While the difference is subtle, current AI is not as good at creating content as it is at evaluating content. In other words, professors, if they bother to learn how to use AI, should have the advantage.
