Prior to the change, too many established members were getting posts removed for posting things that weren’t commercial spam. As long as it’s not overdone, it is permitted for established members to promote their own products and services — especially in the DU Marketplace forum. The rule is really intended to stop the kind of spam that’s produced by spambots and paid spammers. Nobody who is here to participate honestly on DU ever posts that kind of thing. (If they ever do, it can be sent to me directly to take a look at.)
