The statute of limitations are close to expiring. Assange, who faces allegations of sexual assault, has been a fugitive from justice for four years. Swedish prosecutors have decided to travel to the UK, where he is evading justice, to interview Assange before the Statue of Limitations expires.
"My view has always been that to perform an interview with him at the Ecuadorean embassy in London would lower the quality of the interview, and that he would need to be present in Sweden in any case should there be a trial in the future," Ny said in a statement.
"Now that time is of the essence, I have viewed it therefore necessary to accept such deficiencies in the investigation and likewise take the risk that the interview does not move the case forward."

Now what do you do if you're desperate to ensure Assange doesn't face justice for sexual assault? Assail the integrity of the prosecutor, accuse her of "lying" because Sweden has decided to go to the UK rather than let the charges elapse. It takes a lot of effort and justifications to ensure the great and powerful men like Assange not face consequences for allegations of sexual assault. Female victims: liars, worthless. A female prosecutor: a liar whose character must be assassinated to continue the cover up. The accused rapist: not subject to the laws of mere mortals, too great to be held accountable to charges made by lowly women.
This folks is rape culture.

(3,358 posts)both physical and psychological, for the rest of their lives. I cannot imagine having that horrible act always in the background while just trying to live one's life. And to have it go unpunished is both insulting and unfair to the victim.

(42,625 posts)It's all over the news. A narrsistic rapist pig.
Assange has been holed up in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London since June 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden, where prosecutors want to question him about 2010 allegations that he raped one woman and sexually molested another.
Swedish prosecutors have previously balked at coming to Britain to question Assange.
However, a number of the crimes Julian Assange is suspected of will be subject to a statute of limitation in August 2015, according to a statement from Marianne Ny, the director

I researched this whole debacle, and it didn't take me that much time to recognize Assange is an opportunistic asshole. All they have to do Is look at Swedish law.

(55,780 posts)in the case. They insist they know the truth. They go from one BS claim to another. And it's all about worship for a great man, while the victims are less than noting to them. I saw one person on another site with a user name someone uses here: he said he wished those woman would be raped for real as punishment for bringing charges against Assange. That is the level of misogyny that underlies at least some of this.
Then some will say, "it's not illegal here, so it doesn't matter." Well, firstly that's not true, but even if it were, Sweden establishes and prosecutes its own laws. What is legal or illegal here is irrelevant.
The thing is these are people who insult everyone else as third way, while they show they not only don't respect equality before the law, they actively argue against it by insisting someone Assange should have special treatment, concierge justice. They argue against US imperialism, while making absurd claims that show they think Sweden is obligated to conduct itself like America.
Their arguments are entirely devoid of principle. It's all about worship of a single man and making sure he is not held to account for the laws of mortals, least of all for allegedly violating a lowly woman.
It's also symptomatic of the tendency of far too many on this site to make everything about individuals. The issue of NSA spying turned into fights about Greenwald, as if that mattered at all. They project all of the ills of capitalism and our current political system on Clinton, and they insisting freedom of speech and transparency depends on Assange not being held account for rape. Though the only thing they talk about is their worship or contempt for those individuals, as though they have no capacity to discuss larger issues. It's like they have to make every discussion as simplistic as possible to cope with it.
And evidence, forget that. Truth is what they want it to be. One in particular ignores all the legal evidence while droning on constantly about "facts." They assume facts are what they believe, and nothing else matters, least of all the legal evidence in the case. I've systematically taken apart their claims and excerpted and linked to legal documents that prove them wrong, and they respond entirely emotionally and insist they know the truth, even though they have no evidentiary basis for their views. Their claims even relates to legal matters about the case, when they insist the legal documents aren't "worth the paper they are written on." When one is talking about the legal standing of a case, the legal documents ARE the pertinent evidence. How does someone not get that? Instead, it's all about ego: Assange's ego and their inability to distinguish their own egos from absolute truth.
When people who consider themselves the left devote all of their energies to personality cults, is there little wonder they have no effect on politics, that they have rendered themselves irrelevant? Imagine if a fraction of that energy were spent to advancing some policy or proposal for social change.

(42,625 posts)It's ridiculously unwieldy at this point and full of CT crap. As a matter of fact, I don't know why, but I'm a bit shocked at number of long term posters who believe the most incredulous version of events and vehemently defend it even though its patent nonsense.

(121 posts)rancid hot air in that thread were heartening to watch. Sadly, of course, there's no reasoning with those whom you characterize succinctly as needing "every discussion as simplistic as possible to cope with it." They're not about using their critical faculties; they're about unwavering servitude to their own confirmation bias. And it boils down to: Wikileaks did something good, so therefore Assange cannot possibly be a rapist.
And of course these same people are the very first to hurl epithets like "lock-stepper," "hero worshiper," "personality cult," "swarm," and my personal favorite cringe-inducing example of vapor-speak, "authoritarian," with not a hint of a trace of a shadow of a sliver of appreciation for the grotesque irony of their own obnoxious behavior. They've flushed a lot of this website's credibility right down the drain. But it's good to know there are still some rational, sensible people like you active here. While there are, there's still some hope.

(3,167 posts)A bit sad at how many Democrats tend to revert to Republican logic when it comes to this guy. According to them it's not a 'legitimate rape', it's just a 'gubmint hoax' because they want this guy gone.

(55,780 posts)but that how popular the efforts to protect Assange from rape prosecution are. That thread has close to 100 recs. It boils down to we like Assange, therefore nothing else matters. Imagine that view, that if a person is admired, he gets a free pass for life and should not be held to the same laws and procedures that apply to everyone else.

(42,625 posts)The facts are simple, the extent people twist the facts to make a giant conspiracy theory would make a good psychology class lecture. What it says about societies view of women and rape is the stuff of horror films

(55,780 posts)Frightening in fact. Women's lives mean so little, even to too many other women. The great man is all who matters.
