Sioux Falls School District holds last standalone election

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - This year’s election will be the last time the Sioux Falls School District holds a standalone election.

Moving forward, all districts around the state will have to decide to either hold their next election during the primary or general election.

This move was a highly contested issue in Pierre as many lawmakers and South Dakotans feared complicating the ballots and taking away attention from the school board candidates.

Voter turnout in local elections has been a troubling issue and school board elections struggle the most, leading Fort Pierre representative Will Mortenson to pass House Bill 1130 so that municipal and school board elections get more exposure.
