South Dakota Senate passes array of election bills

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – The South Dakota Senate passed an array of bills on Monday regarding elections, including school board election dates, voter residency requirements and 30-day consecutive residency requirements.

HB 1130 would change the date for school board and municipal elections from locally chosen dates to either the primary or general election in June or November.

“These local elections should be held when it’s convenient, like June and the November,” Karr said. “It’s the right thing for the people of our state, and it’s the best thing we can do for our cities, towns and school districts.”

Republican Senators Kevin Jensen, Steve Kolbeck and Randy Deibert spoke out against the bill. Kolbeck explained that voting districts are not the same as school districts, so people would need multiple ballots for voting.
