By Esme Stallard, Climate and science reporter and Visual Journalism Team, BBC News

When temperatures soar, there are a number of simple things you can do to help keep your home and yourself cool.

Here are six practical tips from experts.

1. Let in cool air and encourage air flow
Open windows on opposite sides of the house to encourage air flow - releasing trapped warm air and allowing in cooler air.

Do this when the air temperature outside is cooler than inside, which tends to be overnight or in the early part of the day.

where it's normally quite a bit cooler than it is here in North Alabama.

When it's almost cool enough to do some of these is when the humidity is around 95 percent in the morning. Then the temp rises faster than the humidity drops, and the humidity rises in the evening faster than the temp drops. The last thing you want to do is load up the humidity indoors first thing then have to overwork your AC to remove it in order to be somewhat comfortable.

Some of the suggestions are common sense, and some may or may not be helpful.

If you know of any applicable helpful hints for your locale, please share.

Thanks for the reply, House of Roberts.

Good luck. ❤️

Close blinds on the sunny side of the house, and stay indoors when possible. I mowed my yard last Thursday on the last decent day before this heat dome got going. Now we're having 96-97 with heat index about ten above that.
Tonight we had a lot of overcast leading up to a brief shower near dark, which dropped the temp about ten degrees really quick, so that helped too.
