As I always tell people when they hear me speak, you can't get far enough or stay away long enough for that tattletale accent to disappear. I grew up along northern Casco Bay and the south shore of Cape Cod.

He was from Vermont.

Had a pal from California who did a summer in Maine as dispatcher for a volunteer fire department while he did field studies. He's impression of a call from a farmer whose "Bahn was a'fire" requesting: 'mebbe you fellas could come out and help me?' was amazing. But then, my pal was an anthropologist in training and paid close attention to speech.

When my granny in Missouri died, my older sister and I drove back for the funeral and to see family. When we got back to AZ, none of our western born/bred grown kids could understand a thing we were saying. Yeah, old speech particulars come creeping back no matter what.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?

This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.

As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.

Tell me more...
