They reviewed thousands of photographic plates taken by the Palomar Observatory from 1952 to 1957 prior to the launch of Sputnik, the first man made satellite launched into space. They found numerous transients, which are dots in the images that dont correspond to stars in the sky, and which did not appear on subsequent photos taken 45 or 50 minutes later. The transients correlate with nuclear bomb detonations, and with increased UFO reportings, including the well known UFO sightings over Washington D.C. in 1952. The astronomers were able to rule out conventional explanations including imperfections on the plates with a high degree of statistical significance 22σ.

(28,239 posts)The most important thing to keep in mind is that there is zero evidence that intelligent, space-faring aliens have ever visited this planet.

(3,071 posts)state the extraterrestrial explanation as a conclusion, but the lead scientist on the project, Dr. Beatriz Villarroel, has asserted this conclusion as her opinion in several interviews. She says that these transients appear to be highly reflective fabricated objects with flat surfaces, and theyre clearly not ours. And actually, theres quite a bit of evidence supporting the extraterrestrial hypothesis. Testimony from credible witnesses is one type of evidence, called case history. There are also many recorded conversations between pilots and air traffic control, and between air traffic control and NORAD, that happened during encounters. These are frequently corroborated by radar. But evidence is not proof.
Personally, I suspect this is something more mundane, but Im willing to keep an open mind.

A very real problem in the whole ufo thing is that there are very few people who know about all of the known atmospheric phenomena and the conditions, the night sky, aeronautics, brain processing, and whatever other factors I'm leaving out. Throw in stress in many of these situations, add it to the lack of knowledge, and all you're left with is...well, people saw something.
3. I once saw a very compelling "ufo" one night. I assure you that it's quite spooky. However, I didn't jump to conclusions. I determined that I was going to rule out everything I could think of to explain my observation. Fortunately, after a few minutes, a second flock of geese decided to fly over me while honking and the "ufo" resolved into points of light (individual geese reflecting the city lights). I was still weirded out for a couple of hours. The reaction to these sightings can be very powerful.
4. There is zero evidence for ufos being extraterrestrial vehicles. People see things that they don't understand and try to make some sense of it while lacking the expertise (or luck, in my case) to figure out what they are looking at.
