Las Vegas Ike's Peak hiking
Especially in spring and summer, Las Vegas gets a lot of visiting hikers from across the USA, Europe and elsewhere. Year-round tennis and hiking attract a lot of folks who prefer to avoid the glitz and traffic congestion near the Las Vegas Strip.
Ike's Peak is closest to the southwest part of the valley not far from the relatively new upscale "locals" Durango Resort Casino. This weekly 4 to 5 mile intermediate hike is popular with those who prefer a not-too-easy but not-too-hard hike well suited to more casual over-40 hikers. Due to the prevalence of lava rock on the hike, hiking shoes are required. Sorry, no tennis shoes.
Most of the year, to avoid UV sun exposure, this hike starts very early Sunday mornings. Starting in November, however, it switches to early Saturday afternoon for a few months.
