(43,040 posts)Funny thing -- after we beat Cincinnati, I was like, well, okay, that was Cincinnati, but both the Phillies and Brewers scare me. (I didn't want to play the Cubs because I didn't want to beat 'em unless it was the scratchinest, clawinest and closest series in history.) And then we go 7-1 against the clubs I was afraid of. Go figure.

(43,040 posts)But then they won the '89 NL championship. My dad, a Giants fan forecer, was 78 (mom had died two years earlier) and I thought, christ, this might be his last chance for some baseball glory.
So, before every NLCS game, I'd pop two big bowls of popcorn and we'd sit together and watch them play the Cubs, and it got so I was pulling for them for his sake. And I hated the A's, so...
Then we went through the earthquake together. Our relationship hadn't been so strong since I was a little kid, so I stopped wasting that hate on the Giants. It just seemed silly, given how much Giants-Dodgers games had meant to us over the years.
Dad died three years later. I can't think of baseball without thinking of him, nor vice versa.

(25,572 posts)Once our son was old enough to sit up in seats, we'd take him to Giants games with us and he loved it. He especially loved ragging the Dodgers fans, as he got his dislike of them from his dad. He was so funny, he got so into the smack talk. We moved from CA to FL when he was 5, so no more going to games after that, but we watched and cheered them on tv and still do. It's our first topic of conversation during the season.
