The Curse of the 666

An apocalyptic tale misunderstood
By so many
Who believe they have all the answers
About its meaning
An excuse to hasten destruction
To fulfill the prophecy
They believe will lead them to glory
At the expense of the rest of us

Who is this Beast of whom they speak?
Who is this 666, the unspeakable name?
How can they know the will of God?
How can they predict His actions?
As they tear down our government
As they wreck our country
Bringing on the chaos
They believe should be unleashed

So convinced of their truth are they
Callous and unfeeling
That they would allow the genocide
They think would usher in
The final culling, a rapture
A calling to the heavens
Believing themselves worthy
To be allowed within.

--

This world has become so scary
Frightening, deranged
Ideas millennia old
Have kidnapped their very brains
Ignoring the lessons of history
More recent than their Book
They cannot see the patterns
That lead to searing pain

--

But maybe their predictions have come true
And the Beast is me, and maybe it is you
And all our actions will lead us to the end
Making our world impossible to mend.

--

Turn around
Stare into the mirror
Peer hard into the image of your soul
Tell yourself you want to heal this world
Don’t surrender to the negative
Don’t give in to the criminals
Be positive things can change
To defeat the Beast and 666
We must band together
One giant family
Humanity
Search for the truth
Reject the false
Knowing we have the power to overcome
The Curse of the 666.

Epstein Ballroom is supposed to accommodate up to 999 people. 999 is 666 upside down. Coincidence? I think not!

That's what we called them back then, at least in my area. They invited some of us to this bizarre movie where a young woman ends up at some kind of religious rally & is invited to accept Christ & says, "This isn't for me," & leaves. The next morning she wakes up & the rapture has occurred. This was 50 years ago so it's hazy, but the movie ended with her choosing to commit suicide instead of getting the "sign of the beast" stamped on her. It was like a really bad fairy tale. We laughed about it the next day, but they really believed in it.

I worked as a cashier for many years & three separate times the total came to $6.66, & I was sure to call out, "That will be six-six-six, please!" Every time the person added something to the order.

Your poem is interesting. The ones who most need a serious & truthful look in the mirror, are the ones least likely to do it. I believe Lindsey Graham has broken every mirror & reflective surface in his house lest he see the ghost of John McCain chastising him for being a sniveling, ass-kissing coward.

I think you have picked up on my intent with this one. It's not to denigrate Christianity. It is, however, to show how dangerous it is to assume we fully understand it, even to the point of destroying our world to make it so, somehow.

Thank you for reading my scribbles.
