Geffen is able to avoid the Vietnam draft thanks to advice from actor friend Robert Drivas. He checks
yes to the question, Do you have any homosexual tendencies? The draft board classifies him as
physically or mentally unable to serve.
But don't get me wrong, going to the service was one of the best things that ever happened to me.

(602 posts)I suppose 1971 is when Geffen hinted at "any" homosexual tendencies (does fascination with Broadway musicals count?).
1971 was one of the ugliest years of the Vietnam War. I have encountered a lot of Vietnam vets who do not think their time in service was "one of the best things" that could have happened; many are disabled in body or mind as a result of that no-win war.

As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
