At the climax of the event, a crate filled with disco records was blown up on the field between games of the twi-night doubleheader between the Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers. Many of those in attendance had come to see the explosion rather than the games and rushed onto the field after the detonation. In honor of the 40th anniversary of the infamous "Disco Demolition" promotion that got "a little out of hand", here is a compilation of footage, some not seen since the time of the event and some also in vastly upgraded video quality direct from master tapes.
If you want to know what it was all about, to feel as close as you can to actually being there that night (or watching on TV that night) - this is a good encapsulation while at the same time being as complete as possible.

Wed Jul 13, 2022: I would recommend the "You're Wrong About" podcast episode on Disco Demolition Night...
It covers pretty well how it was, in practice, not about disco music at all, but rather a racist/reactionary spasm.
Mon Jul 12, 2021: On this day in 1979, disco sucks.
