I gave her some chicken that was almost a week old. I had it for dinner last night too but boiled it in the soup. She started acting weird last night. Very lethargic and she didn't sleep with me, which was odd. This morning she's very listless.
Or is there some cat disease going around?

an outdoor cat? Cats can get bird flu and it can be dangerous for them. Week old cooked chicken? I think I have read before you should not keep/eat chicken after three days. I would definitely take her to the vet. Hope she feels better soon.

(25,454 posts)It turns out she has a loose pitella, which is basically her kneecap. She's been hobbling around favoring her other rear leg. The vet moved it back into position and we have her on Gabapentin for a week. If the problem keeps reoccurring, she may need surgery, which can get quite expensive. She's not in any pain, is eating normally, and actually seems sweeter than ever.
Fingers crossed.

why the vet put her on an anticonvulsant medication. Can it be used for other conditions like what your cat is experiencing? Glad she is feeling better!
I think it was to calm her down so she doesn't do any damage to the patella. But we should go back and have her show us how to put it back into place. Better alternative than surgery.
be after reading more about the drug.

(22 posts)There are very few medications you can give a cat for pain. Stuff that humans and even dogs can handle will destroy a cat's little liver or kidneys. Aspirin, Advil, Tylenol, etc., will kill a cat.
There is an NSAID (Onsior) they will prescribe for three days only. Buprinex (an opioid) works very well but vets are very reluctant to prescribe it because the DEA record keeping is oppressive. I couldn't get it for my cat last September when he was dying of cancer. There's a couple of other choices but these are the main ones.
Gabapentin is not a great pain med, despite what my pain management doctor says. It works better for nerve pain. I take it myself for herniated cervical disks. it is also prescribed to relieve anxiety for cats going to the vet, but I never use it because I just found that it made them loopy and anxious at the same time.
She's not in any pain that I can tell. Even when we try to feel the out of place patella. Like you said, it just makes her loopy. The vet said to give her two a day but we only gave her 1/2 of one in the morning and at night. She's off it now and she's still favoring her other rear leg. We'll have to figure something out in the next couple days.
