He wakes me up gently - cold nose in the face or ear - and asks politely if he can join me under the blanket.
I never say no.

I'm on my side, knees drawn up as if sitting, he curls up on my lap and puts his head on my hip.

Contented sighs from both as we go to sleep again.

Alas, no more.
I retired 13 years ago, he was my constant companion.
I will miss him.
But the memories live on.
