Related: About this forumMy dear Kitty with mammary cancer passed last Saturday night in my arms.
Please remember this: A feline cat who has not been spayed by middle age is a target for mammary cancer. A shelter rescue often is only spayed when arriving at the shelter. Please remember that spaying is a health necessity for them.
Kitty had lived with five other cats before she came to me, and so the chances of her having litters is very high. I honestly think that gave her the loving and thoughtful attitude in life. Not spayed until she got to the shelter, though. And I didn't know about this phenomenon to watch for appearance of any tumor.
So. Her passing was extremely difficult for me -- and I know many of you will understand. But I really can't think of that right now.
If I can think of a way to post a photo here on DU, I will do so. She was really cute that day.

into our lives, knowing that we will most likely outlive them, but we do it anyway because life is so much better with them in it.
Its always agonizing when they depart.

(2,522 posts)The last time we had to put a cat down (and of course, you feel responsible for being the one making the call), I tried a different approach, and it worked (at least for me).
The vet came to our house, went to the bedroom where our lovely, incredible Zena was, and put her to sleep. I thought I would ball my eyes out but instead, I thanked Zena for giving and sharing with us close to 20 years of her beautiful life. She was suffering, which made it easier, but for me, this approach made it more of a celebration of her life vs. focusing on my grief.
Wishing you all the best.

(22,209 posts)And advised us on spaying middle aged cats. That was great advice and could maybe be Kittys lesson for all..her legacy. Thinking of you kindly as this is never easy 😻

(21,439 posts)Grasswire2. Hope you can post a picture. I lost one of my kitties last week and I feel the family has shrunk considerably. I did not know about the spaying to prevent mammary cancer so thank you for the information.
Peace to you and Kitty.

Be sweet and gentle with yourself, and give yourself time. After all, you gave her a good life with safety and comfort and love and plenty of food and lots of petting.
You may feel horrible right now, but ya done good.
