(57,936 posts)I started tomatoes from seeds this year.
Based on a suggestion on a site about Los Angeles gardening, when my seedlings were maybe three inches tall, I put them in 1-quart plastic bags of just enough dirt. The website instructs that I should keep the bag closed and add dirt from the top of the bag so that the stem will become very thick. Once the plants are larger and the stems are stronger, I am supposed to cut the bottom off the bag and put it in either the ground or in my case in large pots.
Have you heard of this method of handling the seedlings?
I've had some in bags for a few days now. It's been cold, but the plants are doing very well so far. We shall see.
Apparently the plastic bags work a little like a greenhouse/terrarium.
I'm in S. Calif. so it doesn't get all that cold here, and we don't usually have snow.
