It's German week at Aldi

I bought way too much sausage, Spätzle, Bavarian pretzels, and the all-important Jaffa cakes. I may have to go back for strudel.

But I wasn’t looking for potato pancake mix. They did have some kind of frozen German potato mix, but I didn’t pay much attention to that, either, being distracted by the vast selection of torts and cakes in the freezer case.

My mom used to make them. They were good.

I’ve never used a mix, so can’t tell you what that’s about, but I grew up in a household where Kartoffelpuffer were standard fare. They’re easy to make. Grate three or four peeled large starchy potatoes on the big holes of a box grater along with one onion. Mix in about a tablespoon of kosher salt and set in a colander to drain. After half an hour or so, squeeze out any liquid from the potatoes—some people use a dish towel, but I just use my hands. Mix in an egg and a largish spoonful of flour or potato starch. Fry in oil.

2. My local newspaper weekly ad for Aldi had a chocolate raspberry strudel on the front

page. I figured that my Aldi wouldn't have it as it is a very small store. Today, I was in the much larger store in the nearest larger town, I stopped to see if they had it. Sadly, they only had one of the savory strudels and none of the dessert strudels. I really need to try this chocolate raspberry one.

I would definitely have gotten one. I went back for more this morning and scored apple strudel as well as berry strudel and spinach strudel.
