I really enjoyed "Nonnas"
Starring Vince Vaughn and a slew of great actors. Light, family movie based on a true story. Nothing too deep, just a fun, entertaining flick. I'm going to review it for our local paper.
It's streaming on Netflix.

(23,237 posts)It was wonderful. I have Italian inlaws and it reminded me so much of them as well as all the Italians I knew when I lived in Boston.
I also recommend "Feast of the Seven Fishes" on Prime. It is another heavily Italian movie, featuring an Italian family who ended up in West Virginia coal mining country. They have kept to this Italian Christmas Eve tradition since they have been in the US. Lots of family, humor, a very traditional Old Country Nonna and a college girl who discovers the delights of these old traditions.
We watched them both last night.

(7,076 posts)Just seeing her in the trailer made me want to gag
But I just try to ignore what a horrible person she is and concentrate on the rest of the cast and movie.

(23,237 posts)just because of her. Her role is smaller anyway and her character is a kind person.

Here's a comment from the trailer posted at youtube:
After they permanently closed, the people in the neighborhood knew there was a movie being filmed at Spiritos in Elizabeth NJ, but we didnt know too many details. The restaurant opened in 1932 and they kept everything authentic and original including the menu and decor, until they closed for good in 2020. Their ravioli was legendary and it was my favorite, but some loved the pizza best, or the veal parm, or the garlic salad
I ate there regularly throughout my life and my mom worked there for 25 years until they closed. Like all of their waitresses who were all seniors, they took the orders without ever writing them down. They didnt serve coffee or dessert because the line of hungry customers waiting for a table used to wrap around the room. If you wanted butter you had to bring it from home because they didnt serve it. They didnt need it because the bread was for mopping up the red lead, as their hearty gravy was nicknamed.
I just saw this trailer and it felt so much like coming home that I cried. What a beautiful way to honor the history of such a special place that sadly had to close, than by using it as a set for a movie that celebrates the traditions, food, and love that the restaurant left behind. My mom is 87 now and I am so excited to watch this with her and the rest of our family the day its released. Spiritos was her life and it brought family, food, love and tradition to the table, and its clear that this movie is going to do the same.
