I am so far behind on the Star Wars series's that it will probably be a bit before I catch up but it does look good.

(5,241 posts)They don't screw around with giving you all the info from the cartoons. Can you watch it without those? For sure. But you'll get a lot more out of it and the throwbacks are really solid.

(9,629 posts)You will get more out of the first few episodes of Ashoka if you watch some of the Star Wars Rebels/Clone Wars summary videos on YouTube. Ashoka basically picks up where Star Wars Rebels leaves off.
I never really watched Rebels, and only saw a few Clone Wars episodes (enough to know who Ashoka was). But knowing how the other characters (Sabine, Hera, Ezra) fit into the story really helped.

(12,332 posts)Ponderous writing. Pace as slow as molasses. A sidekick who's supposed to be a kick-ass female but instead comes off as just an idiot. And such miscasting -- the female general looks like she's about 25, with no gravitas at all.
Of all the Star Wars spinoffs, this one is the lamest and most boring.

(5,241 posts)Just curious: did you watch Clone Wars and/or Rebels?
The side kick is this series' Luke Skywalker. Remember how stupid and annoying he was in New Hope? Yeah, that. Just a female. And a mandalorian.
I'm assuming you mean Hera. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is almost 40. And I have enjoyed her quiet, assertive power. People listen to her because she's good at what she does. I don't think all generals need to be raging egomaniacs. She's doing a great job playing the character as presented in Clone Wars/Rebels. And I assume she is going to be put against the crazy ass foil of Thrawn.
I will also fully admit by bias that I think Ahsoka is my favorite Star Wars character.
