Finally watched "All Quiet on the Western Front".

As grim as I thought it would be. Powerful anti-war film. I'm sure it'll take a few Oscars this year.

They changed a lot from the book, needlessly I think. It was good, but I'd put it behind both the 30s version and the 79 remake.

4. The original, with Lew Ayers is one of the best movies ever made

IMO. Certainly the best with an antiwar message. It blows me away this this was made such a short time after the actual war. It didn’t have to be sensationalized to show the senseless destruction, horror and inhumanity. I would be interested in seeing the new one just for comparison

5. WWI might be the most lipstick ever put on a pig. Money was made, but did we really gain much?

Sad that a lot of our guys died or were maimed over there. Then there was the whole pandemic.

7. Never saw the original and saw the remake ages ago.

And I haven't read the book. But I still thought this version was well made.

Edit: Went back and finished it today (4 days later). Gruesome. Horrific. And the juxtaposition of the food at the end--oh, the horror of day old croissants--was very effective.

It definitely is Oscar worthy.

10. I turned it off half way through watching it last night.

Not sure if I will finish. I just didn't see what particular point they were trying to make.
