Recent satellite images have revealed a huge crater at a Russian missile testing site following the explosion of a nuclear-capable RS-28 Sarmat, dealing an embarrassing setback to President Vladimir Putin.
The weapon, known in the West as Satan-2, is considered a key part of Russia's military might by the Kremlin. Yet, this latest blunder marks the fourth consecutive test failure, casting doubts over its dependability.
Analyst MeNMyR shared Planet Lab photos of the Plesetsk cosmodrome in Arkhangelsk Oblast on social media, stating: "As is readily apparent, the RS-28 Sarmat test was a complete failure.
"The missile detonated in the silo leaving a massive crater and destroying the test site. The Sarmat is a liquid-fuelled missile so this accident could have occurred separate from the actual launch activity."
