Equipment delays and derailed freight train cause CZ to be 17 hours late

September 19’s eastbound California Zephyr couldn’t leave Emeryville until the westbound CZ that had departed Chicago on September 19 had arrived. The westbound cars needed to be cleaned and prepared for the eastbound trip.

So right away the eastbound trip was hours- late leaving. Then it got stuck in Nevada due to a derailed freight train ahead of it.

Right now it’s out of Galesburg, Illinois.

1. What a mess!!

It will take "forever" to get this all sorted out. Really screws up everyone's travel plans and changes the vistas viewable in daylight. The multi-day trains in the west and N/S in the east have few, if any, trainsets in reserve. The Zephyr usual has 3 sets active in each direction.

The Starlighter is all out of sync, too.

As for northbound 14, it wasn’t too bad until it hit the Cascades. It was two hours late at Chemult, but ten hours late at the next stop, Eugene.

3. For many years I rode CZ between Reno and SLC

Very seldom ever on time. And then once on a return trip from RNO to SLC I was a little late and had to sprint down the platform before the conductor shut the door to the coach. He gave me a ration of shit for making his train late. Knowing that he could, on any whim, refuse to let me board I held my tongue but it was hard to do because on the outbound trip the train was 4 hours late getting into Reno.

I love trains, and the efficient method of travel, but Amtrak has always tested my patience.
