UAW, Volkswagen reach tentative agreement on contract for Chattanooga workers

After a monthslong stalemate, Volkswagen and the United Auto Workers have reached a tentative agreement on a final contract that the union said includes some key concessions from the company. However, it doesn't accomplish everything.

In a statement posted Wednesday evening, the union said the deal reflects significant improvements over VW's "last, best and final" offer in the fall, when the company walked away from the negotiating table. Those include new product commitments, enhanced right-to-strike protections and newly won job security agreements, according to the UAW.

It also contains stronger safeguards against plant closures or the sale of operations. Additionally, workers will get thousands of added dollars of annual compensation, equaling $6,550 per person upon ratification and $2,550 per year for the life of the agreement.

"For years, Chattanooga workers were told to settle for less while Volkswagen made record profits," UAW President Shawn Fain said in a social media post by the union Wednesday evening. "So, the workers stood together and won their union — and now they've secured a life changing first agreement.
