Bolsonaro Steps Back from Public Life on Doctor's Orders, Slowing His Race Against Time Before Supreme Court Trial and Election

Former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) has canceled all public appearances and will remain on "complete rest" throughout the month of July, according to a statement released this Tuesday (1st).

The decision followed an emergency medical consultation. Bolsonaro, 70, is experiencing persistent bouts of hiccups and vomiting that, according to a note signed by him, are severe enough to prevent him from speaking.

This pause comes at a time when, according to allies, Bolsonaro had been working to preserve his political capital amid growing pressure to name a successor to his electoral base — with São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicanos) currently seen as the strongest candidate.

Beyond the looming elections, Bolsonaro is also facing trial at the Supreme Federal Court (STF).

Disqualified from running for office, the former president is a defendant in the case involving an alleged coup plot, and ministers’ aides and lawyers involved in the case expect the trial to take place in September. If convicted, he could face a sentence of over 40 years in prison.
