El Chapo's son, Ovidio Guzmán-López, arrested amid violence

The son of notorious Mexican drug kingpin "El Chapo" has been arrested in Sinaloa, Mexican officials say, as violence erupted in the state.

The mayor of the city of Culiacán said armed forces had carried out a raid early on Thursday.

An airline said one of its planes was hit by gunfire, while shooting and car-jackings have been reported.

Guzmán-López is thought to be a high-ranking member of a major drug cartel, the Sinaloa.

Mexican security forces had previously arrested Mr Guzmán-López in 2019 but released him to avoid the threat of violence from his supporters.

The US state department says he and his brother Joaquín are currently overseeing approximately eleven methamphetamine labs in the state of Sinaloa, producing an estimated 1,300- 2,200kg (3,000-5,000lb) of the drug per month.

They have also said that information indicates Mr Guzmán-López ordered the murders of informants, a drug trafficker and a popular Mexican singer who refused to sing at his wedding.

What a joy it is learning there are still more of these Chapitos left running around loose!
