(18,826 posts)Hadn't heard of Tails.
The concept is not a new one - various versions of Linux are small enough to run from a USB drive. So is Win PE - for fault finding. Couple of things to keep in mind; bootable USB operating systems are generally SLOW. Still, I've used this in the past to rescue bricked computers and they do certainly work.
When I see something marketed as 'covering your tracks', red lights start flashing. This could become the popular method of accessing all sorts of illegal things - think child porn etc. Don't get caught up in this.
Otherwise, I'm definitely going to download it and burn a bootable usb. I'd like to know what the kernel is and other things.

(16,871 posts)However, tails is a complete operating system that runs off removable media, so no track is left on a desktop or computer cafe machine.
I post about such things in Activist Headquarters forum.
Used to be optical media. Thumbdrives any more.

(20,126 posts)Just wanted more information. I don't think I need this yet, but I have a second computer to play with so I will see if I can do this. Who knows what kind of tracking there could be in the future.
Again, thank you. I knew about Tor, but didn't want to get into it.
Edit: Never been to the dark web, no plans to go.

(16,871 posts)A tor browser can browse regular web addresses (https/http) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, as well as onion addresses, which you'll rarely if ever go to.
There are legitimate sites on the dark (onion) web. Especially for anonymous tipsters and so on.
The browser in TAILS is a modified firefox to do onion browsing, so within a decibel, it's the same as the regular tor browser. (best of my knowledge)

Now, the point is: What are you sharing/communicating with whom?
One weak link in your group can divulge everything, if they are threatened and unlock their phone or computer. I believe this is how most signal and other encrypted info is divulged.
On one hand, signal messenger seems the best to me for messaging (even does videoconferencing) and I am going to look into all the tools available at riseup.net.
The same "weak link" caveat applies.
