Sound Transit's cost-saving proposal revives station site plan near Amazon campus
A Sound Transit proposal to save $1.5 billion on the Ballard Link extension has resurrected a plan to alter the location of a future South Lake Union light rail station that was pushed by Amazon two years ago.
Earlier this month, Sound Transit board chair Dave Somers laid out the agencys first concrete proposal to scale back light rail expansion plans as it faces an estimated $34.5 billion budget deficit over the next 20 years.
The proposal includes cost savings from the consolidation of two South Lake Union stations along the future Ballard line: a stop near the intersection of Denny Way and Westlake Avenue, and a station at the intersection of Seventh Avenue North and Harrison Street.
The consolidation would eliminate the Harrison Street station, saving the agency an estimated $1.5 billion to $1.7 billion. It would shift the Denny Way station west and north of Westlake Avenue, out of the street and onto private property.
