Tech layoffs shrink Seattle-area labor market as industry shifts focus to AI

A hiring slowdown and layoffs in the tech industry have shrunk the Seattle-area labor market.

The Seattle-Bellevue metro area, excluding Tacoma and Everett, lost 14,900 jobs between August 2024 to August 2025, according to the latest available data from the Washington State Employment Security Department.

About 28% of those job losses came from the Seattle area’s information and tech sector. Within the sector, the number of “software” jobs this August was at its lowest level since mid-2017.

“The labor market has lost a lot of steam,” Paul Turek, regional labor economist at the ESD, told the Business Journal.
