South County Fire will clean the Port of Edmonds' breakwater on Monday

EVERETT — South County Fire and the Port of Edmonds will clean the marina’s breakwater on Monday.

The protective barrier designed to shield the port from waves, known as the breakwater, builds up bird droppings that would generate an odor at the waterfront and marina without cleaning. Marine 16, a fire and rescue boat based at the Port of Edmonds, will use streams of water directly from the bay to wash away the droppings, according to a South County Fire press release.

The cleaning serves as a training opportunity for firefighters to practice skills like applying water streams from a moving vessel in a confined area, the release said.

The port consulted with the United States Department of Agriculture to avoid impacts on wildlife, and a representative from the department visually surveyed the breakwater before the cleaning, the release said. The work on the breakwater falls outside the shorebird nesting season.
