After months of speculation, pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca has finally announced where it plans to build its first Virginia-based manufacturing facility.
In statements from both the company and the Virginia governor's office Oct. 9, AstraZeneca announced that the proposed $4.5 billion plant will be built in Albemarle County at Rivanna Futures, about 11 miles north of Charlottesville. The project is expected to generate around 3,600 jobs − 3,000 of them in construction and 600 in highly skilled positions.
With our $4.5 billion investment in Virginia, the largest in AstraZenecas history, we are not only building a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, but also driving life sciences innovation and economic growth," company CEO Pascal Soriot said in the company statement. "This new facility will create thousands of jobs and strengthen Americas national security and health sovereignty."
AstraZeneca said the plant will produce drugs for its weight-management and metabolic lines of business.
