Wildlife Watch: Farmers join in bobolink conservation efforts

SHOREHAM, Vt. (WCAX) - Some farmers have done several cuts of hay for the year already, but a growing number are leaving part of their fields uncut as part of a cooperative effort to conserve populations of grassland birds.
The bobolink population has been in decline since the turn of the century, with some estimates that half of the birds have been lost since the 1970s. Their decline has primarily been due to changes in farming practices, including fields that are now mowed earlier and more often than they were in the past.
In this week’s Wildlife Watch, Ike Bendavid visited an Addison County farm that is part of an Audobon Society program known as the Bobolink Project, linking farmers and birders together to support bird-friendly agricultural practices.
