Nashville philanthropist Steve Turner passes

"Steve Turner, an original developer of Nashville's Gulch neighborhood, former Dollar General executive and longtime Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum board member died Tuesday. He was 77.
Turner's funeral will be open to the public on Sunday, Feb. 23, at Schermerhorn Symphony Center, 1 Symphony Pl. Visitation is at noon and the service begins at 3 p.m.
Turner's company MarketStreet Enterprises, which he founded in 1999, played a significant role in developing one of Nashville's hottest centers of commerce. The Gulch was once home to a busy railroad yard with origins dating back to the Civil War, but the area sat sparsely occupied for decades until the Turner family took over in the early 2000s.

"My cousin was a great person, a wonderful friend with a huge personality, and he was extremely smart," former U.S. Rep. Bob Clement said in a statement. "When I served as a member of the U.S. Congress, Ill never forget the passion Steve had for his community. We owe a lot to Steve for development of the Gulch and his immense generosity."

Turner and his wife Judy were also massive supporters of Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Vanderbilt University, Turner's alma mater. He and his wife endowed a new faculty chair in 2021, and their family also supported capital expansion and telemedicine services at the Childrens Hospital in 2017.
In a 2021 news release, VUMC named Turner and his wife Judy "among Nashvilles leading philanthropists.".. (more)
