ICE facility in Newport may be back in consideration for May 2026

Background: You may remember seeing Rachel Maddow cover the community uprising against plans to create a concentration camp in my little Oregon coastal town. They backed down, but now it appears they may be back in the planning stages. They're still being circumspect, saying "no it's not happening (until maybe May)....."

Newport, Ore — The Department of Homeland Security has put plans to build a temporary detention facility at the Oregon coastal town of Newport's municipal airport on hold till May, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) official confirmed in a court filing.

Statement by Rep David Gomberg
“Evidence is clear that ICE wants to turn Newport into the epicenter of their Oregon detention and deportation efforts. But when asked a straight question, DHS refuses to give us a straight answer. They tried to sneak into Lincoln County and we pushed back. This newest declaration makes clear that rather than sneak away, they want to keep their options open. But if they think they can quietly setup shop here, they are in for a very rude awakening.”

The facility would be a holding pen for people being transported to God-knows where.
